robot photo Muramator
as seen in Popular Electronics August 1991

Muramator tries to circle around anything it sees - including other robots! This creature is easy to assemble and can be built with several different bodies. In operation, it uses a single infrared proximity detector to sense its local environment and a collection of neuron-like elements to interpret the data. The first level of this brain makes Muramator veer away from obstacles, while the second level lets it seek out edges. You can even get Muramator to run a tabletop obstacle course! Included is a tutorial article which describes the physiology of neurons and explains how they are connected to generate complex behaviors. You can also explore how the creature's overall behavior changes as you vary its neural and sensory parameters. This kit is our best beginner's robot and only requires about forty dollars of additional parts to complete.
